Matchup Monday: Bout #4

World Championship Final Matchup

Result: Douglas dec. Green 34-15

bout #4

In bout #4 of Matchup Monday legendary coach Bobby Douglas will be taking on current World Team member James Green.  Douglas made his first Olympic appearance in 1964, the same year he was forced to sit out a season at Oklahoma State due to NCAA transfer rules. He went 4-1 at the Olympic games in Tokyo falling just short of a bronze medal. In 1965 as a senior at OSU a severe concussion prevented the undefeated top seed Bobby Douglas from winning the NCAA title for the Cowboys, but his days of competing were not over. He went on to take second place at the World Championships in 1966, was the U.S freestyle team captain for the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, he won the World Championship bronze medal  in 1970 at 68 kg, and was named USA’s outstanding wrestler of 1970 before retiring that same year.

James Green, the 4x All-American from Nebraska also never won an NCAA title; during his four trips to the NCAA tournament he placed 7th, 7th, 3rd, 3rd respectively. While no one can argue that this was an extremely impressive accomplishment in itself, Green was clearly  not satisfied. Coming off a third place finish at the 2015 NCAA tournament he wasted no time in setting his sights on goals even bigger than an NCAA title. Green won the 2015 world team trials and even more impressively took home the 70 kg bronze medal at the World Championships in Las Vegas, with a fall in his final match that brought the United States crowd to their feet and made a statement that his best is yet to come.

Both world medalists proved without a doubt that you don’t need an NCAA title to compete with the best wrestlers in the world, but the question is if Douglas and Green were to face off in a world championship final who would finally be able to call themselves number one? Does Bobby Douglas win one for the legends of wrestling’s past? Or does Green join World Team members Jordan Burroughs and Zach Rey as Matchup Monday winners? It’s time to let the voters decide!
