Matchup Monday: Bout #12

NCAA Division 1 Matchup

dustin schlatter vs. Jason Tsirtsis

Last week on Matchup Monday the past defeated the present for the bout #11 matchup. This week, for Bout #12 we’re going with two 149 pounders that have a lot in common. First up we have Dustin Schlatter a junior from Minnesota who captured an NCAA title as a true freshman for the Gophers in 2006 going 42-1 on the season. In his sophomore campaign Schlatter would again only record one loss on the season which would come in the semi-finals of the NCAA tournament where he achieved all-american honors for the second consecutive year with a third place finish at 149 lbs. Schlatter entered the 2007-2008 season as a Junior  with a career record of 79-2, and would once against be competing at 149 lb weight class.

Across from Schlatter on this week’s Matchup Monday is North Western’s current 149 pounder and former national champion, Jason Tsirtsis. As a red shirt freshman Tsirtsis went 32-3 for the Wildcats and even more impressively he won three consecutive overtime matches to take home the 2014 NCAA Title at 149 lbs. In the  2014-15 season Tsirtsis would once again dominate the majority of the 149 lb weight class, and although he did not win a national title he came pretty close with a third place finish at the 2015 NCAA Tournament, completing the season with 39 wins and just two losses.

So, we have two wrestlers who were both named Big Ten freshman of the year; both won national titles as freshmen at 149 lbs; both wrestlers would then take third place at the NCAA Tournament in their sophomore seasons , and both wrestlers entered their junior years again at 149 lbs. So, the question is who wins?
