NCAA Division 1 Team Matchup

matchup monday bout #10 preview

For our 10th ever Matchup Monday we decided to mix things up with a team match. Gable’s Hawkeyes faced a lot of obstacles throughout the 1992-1993 season with a loss to Nebraska, a tie with Penn State, and major lineup changes throughout the season including pulling Freshman Lincoln Mcllravy out of red shirt and into the starting lineup late in the season. If there was one thing to be learned that year, it was to never doubt Dan Gable. He knew they needed to be better and that it would require change. Evidently, the changes that were made paid off, because the Hawkeyes went on to become the 1993 NCAA Team Champions.

Now, on Matchup Monday they will once again have to get passed the Nittany Lions of Penn State. They will be facing Cael Sanderson’s National Championship Team from 2012. After suffering just one dual meet loss during the 2011-2012 season to Minnesota (23-14)  Cael demonstrated his ability to peak when it mattered. At the 2012 NCAA tournament there was never a doubt who would finish in the #1 spot, because Penn State was simply in a league of their own. The Nittany Lions outscored the second place team (which happened to be the Minnesota Gophers) by 25.5 points to take home their second consecutive team title.

Here we have two of the greatest wrestlers/coaches in the history of our sport that have simply mastered the art of winning, and they are about to go head to head right here on Matchup Monday. The question is if Gable’s 1993 Hawkeyes were to scrap with Sanderson’s 2012 Nittany Lions who comes out on top? Check out the projected lineups, and let us know who you got!

Things to consider: When analyzing the matchups take the wrestlers age into consideration. While one wrestler may have had a more successful career than the other if one is a freshman and the other is a senior that may have an impact on the match outcome. You will also notice some unofficial weight classes. Due to weight changes over the years this was the best way to balance it out without giving either team too much of an advantage.
